Nick Pappas (English Teacher) VIEW PROFILE

Nick Pappas was born in Dorothy, West Virginia on November 10, 1922.  He died in Detroit, Michigan on September 22, 2012. Mr. Pappas was the son of Greek immigrants, Harry and Crissy Pappas. He was a brother of the late Antonia Pappas; husband of Davida Tobin Glassman Pappas; devoted father of Nicholas Harry Pappas; step-father of Dr. Anthony Lee Glassman (Karen); and step-grandfather of Matthew S. Glassman.  After graduating from Pontiac High School, Mr. Pappas joined the U.S. Marine Corps and served in the Pacific theater during World War II. He was part of the 6th Marine Division and was a recipient of the Purple Heart. Upon his discharge from the military, he attended Wayne State University where he received a B.A. in English and a certification to teach English and Geography at the secondary level. He elected to join the U.S. Air Force Reserve and attended the Military Language School. Upon completion of that course, he served as a special intelligence officer in Athens, Greece for the United States Embassy. Upon returning to the United States, he was employed by the Dearborn Board of Education to instruct in English and Geography. Although he was considered a "tough teacher," many of the students thanked him in later years for his insistence upon stressing his subjects. He was asked by private schools and colleges to instruct at their off campus classes, but he preferred to stay at Dearborn High School so that he could spend more time with his beloved special needs son.  Mr. Pappas retired from the Air Force Reserve in 1978 as a Lt. Colonel. He retired from teaching in 1986. He was a member of Alpha Sigma Phi Fraternity, Beta Tau Chapter. He was also a member of the Lou Walker's Social Club. His family would like to extend special thanks to the staff at St. Joseph's Manor and Hospice Compassus. Military graveside services were held Wednesday, October 10, 2012 at 2:30 p.m. at the Great Lakes National Cemetery, 4200 Bedford Road, Holly, Michigan.
