Jack Johnson

( December 05, 1928 - October 25, 2019 )

John “Jack” Johnson, age 90, passed away peacefully on October 25, 2019 with his family by his side. Jack was born on December 5, 1928 in Two Harbors, Minnesota. After moving around Minnesota and the Dakotas as a child, Jack’s parents moved to Dearborn, Michigan when he was in high school. This is where he met his lovely wife, Dolores Kuciemba. They dated for three years before marrying in 1952.

Jack attended Michigan State Normal College (which later became Eastern Michigan University) and received his teaching degree in physical education before continuing graduate study at the University of Illinois. Jack and Dolores had their first daughter, Sharon, while living  in Champaign, Illinois. They moved back to Michigan where Jack became a teacher with Dearborn Public Schools. They settled into a home in Livonia and had two more children, Jim and Carol. Jack taught and coached at Dearborn High School for nearly 40 years. While he didn't get the head basketball coaching job he initially wanted, he accepted the swim coach position when it was offered. That turned out to be a pretty good decision as he went on to become one of the most successful and respected swim coaches and athletic directors in Michigan high school history winning state championships in 1971, 1972 and 1974

Jack had many professional accomplishments throughout his life. He was a proud graduate of both Eastern Michigan University and the University of Illinois. He had a passion for high school athletics and received many awards including induction into the Michigan High School Coaches Hall of Fame, having the Dearborn High School Hall of Fame named in his honor, and receiving the Charles E. Forsythe award from the Michigan High School Athletic Association, its highest honor. Jack also received John Porter Award for Distinguished Service to Eastern Michigan University.

Upon retirement, Jack and Dolores spent their summers in the Traverse City area where Jack worked and golfed at the Grand Traverse Resort.  After retirement, Jack continued to be active in the administration of high school athletics in Michigan until his passing.

Jack is survived by his beloved wife of sixty-seven years, Dolores; his children: Jim (Jodi), Carol (Mike) Revard, and son-in-law, Barry Isaacson; grandchildren: Tim and Andy Isaacson, Howard and Michael Revard, and Max Johnson; great grandchildren: Brady, Grace and Abigail Isaacson. Predeceased by his daughter, Sharon Isaacson. Jack will be dearly missed by his friends and family.

Visitation will be October 31, 2019 at the Howe-Peterson Funeral Home, 22546 Michigan Ave. in Dearborn, Michigan from 12-6pm with a Funeral Service at 6pm.

Family suggests memorial contributions be given to  the "Dearborn High School Athletic Fund" or the "Michigan Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association".
