Born May 16, 1937 in Melvindale.

George Richard Arrick, Jr., longtime resident of Dearborn, Michigan, passed away Wednesday, January 5, 2022 at Beaumont Hospital in Dearborn.

George, also known as Geo to his friends and family, grew up in Melvindale as the only son of George Arrick, Sr. and Irma Sims, and graduated from Melvindale High School in 1954. He played varsity football, basketball and track, and was inducted into the Melvindale Athletic Hall of Fame in 2001.

After high school he attended Alma College, in Alma, Michigan, and studied English and Physical Education to be a secondary teacher. In college he played football, basketball and track. He was inducted into the Alma College Athletic Hall of Fame in 1977.
His accolades include:

-Being named to the All-MIAA teams in basketball and football
-Basketball MVP in 1957 and '58
-Captained the basketball team in 1957 and '58
-Captained the football team in 1957
-Graduated with 10 varsity letters from Alma College

After college, Geo began a long teaching career in Dearborn Public Schools during the 1958 - '59 school year. He started at Bryant Junior HIgh School before transferring to Adams Junior High School, then Dearborn High School, where he spent the rest of his career. He taught English literature and creative writing courses, and coached football and track for many years. He was named Assistant Coach of the Year in 1992 by Michigan Track Coaches Association for his longtime service to coaching the sport. His specialty was shot put and discus, and he coached many throwers to state qualifiers throughout the years. He retired from teaching in 1999 after 40 years. The Dearborn High School track shot put area is named Arrick's Circle in his honor. He was beloved and respected by students, athletes and colleagues from Dearborn Schools.

Geo received his Masters in English Literature from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. He has been a lifelong fan of the University of Michigan sports teams.

He enjoyed black and white photography and was a member of the Creative Camera Club and the Downriver Camera Club, exhibiting his work in several photo competitions. He also loved reading, camping, hiking, and spending time with family and friends. He had many loving dogs, including Samoyed Huskies Myshkin 1, 2 and 3, as well as Australian Shepherds Otis and Daisy. He spent many summers at his family farm in Roscommon, Michigan near Higgins Lake, where his mother had been born and raised. George, his family and his pets enjoyed many summers camping in the Rocky Mountains, Smoky Mountains, Maine and Arizona. Most winter vacations were spent in Michigan's Upper Peninsula trekking through the snow on snowshoes and enjoying time in the beautiful northern woods.

He is survived by his loving wife, Joanne (Bennett) Arrick, his daughter Amy (Brian) Miller, and his two grandsons Sean and Joseph Miller.
