A week ago one of my closest friends, Pete Kerr, died unexpectedly, on January 7, 2023, surrounded by his loving family members. Needless to say, I have been profoundly saddened ever since I learned this news. Pete was my school mate, my best man, and above all ….. he was my dear friend. From our early teens we did so much together. During school years we’d spent weekends together with our other friends trying to stay out of trouble; over summers between school years we camped together in the Traverse City, MI state park; over our senior year spring break we spent it together driving down to Pompano Beach, Florida. When I left to attend college in Champaign, Illinois, Pete drove me down to the campus 7 hours away, and he visited me there on several occasions with some of our other friends. When I was in military service stationed in San Diego, California, Pete visited. When we entered the work force, married, started families, and moved apart geographically on a more permanent basis, we never once ever lost contact. We saw each other every year – whether in Michigan or in California – and we called each other each year on our respective birthdays even though they were only 5 days apart. In recent years, when I’d returned to Dearborn, Michigan each summer I would always spend an overnight with Pete and friends at his RV away from home in Homer, Michigan, i.e., his place of refuge and solace. This year we got together in Homer twice … once in August, and then again in October 2022, i.e., three months ago. ….. I will miss you, Pete, as will so many, many others who knew you…..but I will always carry you and the memories we shared together in my heart. You were a kind and gentle giant and my world has been a better place because you were in it.
